25 Years Of The San Antonio Highland Games and Celtic Music Festival

Geeky Global Treks: Celebrating 25 Years of the San Antonio Highland Games in Helotes

The San Antonio Highland Games have always felt like one of those Texas traditions that sneaks up on you—in the best way possible. One moment you’re cruising through Helotes, and the next you’re surrounded by the sound of bagpipes, the thud of cabers hitting the earth, and a sea of tartan as far as the eye can see. This year is extra special: the festival marks its 25th anniversary, a milestone that highlights just how deeply Scottish heritage has rooted itself in South Texas.

A Brief History of the Games
The San Antonio Highland Games Association officially came to life on December 3, 1997, when local Scots—tired of driving long distances to experience their culture—formed an organization dedicated to bringing Highland traditions to the Alamo City.
By the early 2000s, the festival had found its home at the Helotes Festival Grounds, where it continues to grow each year. Today, it’s a full weekend celebration of athletics, music, dance, and clan heritage, drawing visitors from across Texas and beyond.
What You’ll See at the Festival
The Highland Games are a sensory feast—part sporting event, part cultural showcase, part family fair. Here’s what fills the grounds each spring:

Highland Athletics
Expect world‑class competitors taking on iconic feats of strength:
- Caber toss
- Hammer throw
- Sheaf toss
- Weight over bar
- Stone put
These events attract athletes from around the world, and several records have even been set right here in Helotes.

Clans & Cultural Displays
More than 30 clans typically set up tents, offering genealogy help, history lessons, and a chance to discover whether your family name has Scottish roots.
Music & Dance
Live Celtic bands, bagpipe performances, and traditional Scottish and Irish dancing fill the air with energy. The festival also features living‑history reenactors, artisans, and even Scottish dogs.

Kids Glen
A dedicated area where young festival‑goers can try mini versions of the heavy athletics and learn about Celtic culture through hands‑on crafts.
What to Eat: A Feast Fit for a Highlander
Food is a major part of the experience, and the vendors bring a mix of traditional Scottish fare and festival favorites. Past offerings have included:
- Steak pies & cheese pies
- Bangers & mash
- Fish & chips
- Corned beef sandwiches
- Gyros, hummus, and baklava
- Warm pretzels, popcorn, and novelty ice creams
- Haggis bowls, haggis tacos, Scottish nachos, and Irn‑Bru

Whether you’re craving something hearty, something sweet, or something adventurous (yes, haggis tacos count), you’ll find it here.

Why the 25th Anniversary Matters
Reaching a quarter‑century is more than a number—it’s a testament to the community that built this festival from scratch. The 25th anniversary Games, held March 28–29, 2026, celebrate not only Scottish heritage but also the volunteers, athletes, musicians, and families who’ve kept the tradition alive.
It’s a moment of pride for Helotes and San Antonio, marking the festival as one of the region’s most enduring cultural events.

Tomo’s Favorite Part of the Festival
You know our Geeky Global Treks mascot—Tomo always finds the heart of any adventure. At the Highland Games, his absolute favorite spot is the Clash of the Clans area, where he can wander from tent to tent collecting stories, symbols, and lore. He loves how each clan has its own personality, tartan, and history, and he never misses a chance to pose with a caber (even if he can’t quite lift it).
